A Healthy Way to Detox: Daily Greens 4-Day Cleanse
The debut of the perfect summer cleanse from former AW cover woman and Daily Greens Founder Shauna Martin.
Diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 33, November 2014 cover woman Shauna Martin began a mission to find ways to supplement her recovery. After attending the premier of health activist Kris Carr’s film, Crazy Sexy Cancer, Martin read every book regarding the correlation between food and disease, specifically the connections between food and cancer, that she could get her hands on. Influenced by her research, Martin made the transition to eating raw foods and drinking green juice, a lifestyle change she attributes her speedy recovery to.
With a newly found passion for raw foods and juice, Martin stepped away from her career in law to launch her company, Daily Greens, which now sources it’s juices to more than 1,100 stores throughout the country.
In her new book, Daily Greens 4-Day Cleanse, Martin aims to share her story in order to empower others to take control of their health. The book includes collaboration with nutrition expert Lauren Minchen and recipes for four seasonal cleanses, which involve drinking juice during the day and eating a raw dinner at night for four days. In addition, a portion of the royalties of the book will go to programs dedicated to providing support to young women battling breast cancer.
“I really believe drinking green juice makes people so much healthier and sets them on a path to a long-term healthy lifestyle,” Martin says.
Congratulations on the book, Shauna, and cheers to healthy lifestyle changes!
Shauna Martin’s Exclusive Recipes to Try at Home
Peach Green Juice
“Peaches may be my all-time favorite fruit during the summer. I love stopping at farm stands and buying them directly from farmers. Don’t refrigerate them, as they taste much better warm and ripe straight from the farm. They make a scrumptious addition to a green juice.” — Shauna Martin
Optional lunch addition: One peach, sliced. Your need for additional fruit should decrease each day of the cleanse. However, you don’t want to run out of energy, so if your energy or blood sugar is running low, have this sliced fruit after your juice.
Ingredients
1 cucumber
1 peach
Big handful of spinach (2/3 bunch)
Handful of mint (3 to 4 leaves)
1/4-inch piece ginger root
1/8 cup pineapple or 3/4 cup pineapple chunks
Directions
Wash the cucumber, peach, spinach, mint and ginger. Cut and core the peach, and cut into pieces that will fit through your juicer. Top and tail the pineapple, peel it and cut into pieces that will fit through your juicer. Run all ingredients through your juicer, scrape off foam (if desired) and enjoy!
Yellow Bell Pepper Juice
“Don’t let the color of this drink fool you. It’s chock-full of green goodness!" — Shauna Martin
Optional lunch addition: One cup of sliced yellow bell pepper (yellow capsicum). If your juice isn’t enough, nosh on this as well.
Ingredients
1 cucumber
3 to 5 celery stalks, bottoms removed
2 to 3 kale leaves
1 yellow bell pepper (yellow capsicum)
Handful of basil (3 to 4 leaves)
1/2 lemon, peeled (optional)
Directions
Wash the cucumber, celery, kale, bell pepper and basil. Remove the top and seeds from the bell pepper and cut into pieces that will fit through your juicer. If you need to cut the greenness, use half a lemon. If not, skip it. Run all ingredients through your juicer, scrape off foam (if desired) and enjoy!
