Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr
Austin's first woman fire chief ever is also one of only a handful of women serving as metropolitan fire chiefs nationwide and a fourth-generation firefighter, following in her dad, grandfather and great-grandfather's footsteps. Responsible for cutting the department's $121 million-dollar budget, as well as the employment of its 1,051 firefighters (51 of which are female) in 44 stations, Chief Kerr has quite a task ahead of her. Surely her 26 years of experience, and more than a decade preceding that as a teacher, will serve her well, not to mention her many years of service to international, civic and professional organizations. Hot stuff!
