You’ve heard the benefits of dance before—creativity, socialization, stress relief and exercise, to name a few—but you’ve never known it was actually something you could do! Check out these open-to-beginners studios and meet-ups, learn social dances and meet other Austinites in fun, casual settings. Who knows, you might even fall in love with the tango.

Well known throughout town for excellent instructors and wide offerings, GoDance welcomes all levels of talent and experience. The studio offers private lessons and popular group classes in dances like the two-step, social swing, salsa, blues and lindy. If you’re interested in starting to take classes, sign up for a free introductory lesson. Additionally, GoDance hosts dance parties and casual social dance meet-ups—often with a happy hour!—open to all for free or for a cover charge of about $5.

Sunday Evening Salsa at The Oasis

Pair a spectacular sunset and an exciting dance together for a perfect Sunday evening! Enjoy live music by The Brew, an accomplished Latin and jazz-inspired band, as you hang out, dance or take a free lesson with family or friends in front of an incredible sunset view. The music begins at 7 p.m., so there’s plenty of time to take a break and order a drink as you watch the sun go down. If you’re looking for an exciting atmosphere to learn and practice this social dance, The Oasis is the place to be!

As soon as you walk in the door and see the huge Lone Star curtain, you’ll know you’re in a Texas dance hall. Located in East Austin near Plaza Saltillo, this honky-tonk venue presents live music every night. Take a Cajun dance or two-step lesson on a Friday or Saturday, then join a full crowd on the dance floor later that night to show off your moves. Expect a bustling crowd, a great beer selection and an energetic atmosphere.

Esquina Tango

This nonprofit emphasizes Argentine and Latin American cultures and traditions while fostering East Austin community-building and wellness through the arts. Sign up for classes in dances like tango, salsa, samba and bachata, with talented instructors, all while supporting this cultural society. Esquina’s calendar is always filled with tango parties, workshops and meet-ups, so it’s the perfect place to insert yourself into the city’s thriving tango community.
