Have you ever heard someone say, “My bedroom? It’s no big deal. I just sleep there.” It’s true that we spend a lot of time in that particular space with our eyes closed. But your bedroom can be more than just a place to crash at night. It can be wonderfully expressive, soothing or energizing to you by turns. Your bedroom can provide everything you need to relax, renew and rejuvenate yourself each time you use it.
How can you get your bedroom to “talk” to you; and what do you want it to say? Here are five ways to find the language of your special place:
1. COLOR
Your bedroom is the one room in the house that can truly be its own world. Bedrooms are isolated spaces, usually off to one side of the house or down a hall.
This is your opportunity to use a color scheme that you wouldn’t dream of using in a more public area of your home. Think of the marvelous cocooning effect of chocolate walls melting into blue-and-brown bedding. Are you stuck with white walls? Think red for bed and windows to bring a nice, bright wake-up each morning. Blue-greens with lavender offer a soothing, relaxed feel for those who like to float away into dreamland.
2. COMFORT
Bedroom essentials always include a place to sit down and put on your shoes. It can be a bench at the end of the bed, a chair or a luxurious chaise at the window if you have a large bedroom. To complete the list of must-haves, add a standing, full-length mirror in a corner and a side table with a lamp tall enough to read under. (No texting, please, unless it’s poetry!)
3. STYLE
Your special room can reflect your personal style, even if it’s a style somewhat different from the other areas of your home. How about expressing your inner Diva with an elegant piece of artwork above your bed? Or go wild with a center panel of animal print in your custom-made duvet cover, with silk-shirred curtains that complement rather than match.
4. LOVE
You’re going to love the changes you’ve made! The language of the bedroom is the language of the heart: the elements that combine to warm yours, and if your heart is warm; so is your partner’s (or future partner)!
5. COLLECTION
A bedroom is the perfect place to showcase your fun side. A collection of funky reading glasses can look great hung on a colorful ribbon stretched across the wall space above a tall dresser. A dazzling array of small mirrors collected from favorite shops, flea markets or eBay, can be hung closely together to give the effect of a large one. Try a diamond shape; it’s always a girl’s best friend.
