Dear reader:

This spring, with all the talk of failed banking institutions and investment schemes, industries in the red from car companies to the red carpet, billion-dollar bailouts, bonuses and the downward spiral of our 401ks, mortgages, the market and the ominous economic climate, we thought Austin women might need a little boon to both their businesses and spirits. So, in April, we’ve decided to focus on the “glass is half-full”/”opportunity in crisis” mentality by choosing to celebrate entrepreneurialism with some of our favorite Business Babes – featuring bold Baby Greens founder Sharon Mays as our cover subject and innovative local businesswomen for our special feature section. These individuals inspire us to think outside the proverbial corporate box and entertain the thought of becoming our own bosses. After all, what better time to start a business than when you’ve lost your job, have lots of free time and costs are down? Of course, we understand not everyone can be an entrepreneur, but hope you will be inspired to look at work with a new set of spectacles and find ways to innovate in your own industry or endeavors.

In addition to the inspiring stories of individual women’s innovation, we also offer last minute tax tips for entrepreneurs in our Worth column; techniques for better decision making in Achieve; the best on Blackberries, iPhones and the latest mobile tools in Gadget Girl; and advice on how to navigate the murky meaning of “business casual” in our Style column – for those of us working in one of the most laid-back climates in the country!

Also of note, our Kids’ Health series explores the many faces of autism and the myriad of possible causes and cures for this epidemic among our children; an escape to San Diego in Explore and to the WD Spa closer to home in Spagirl; as well as the world of Washington Wines in Uncorked and fascinating tips on raising your own chicken and eggs in Sustenance. Finally, two Texas trailblazers: Broadway legend Betty Buckley and small-screen star Janine Turner celebrate the spirit of individuality in the arts that has made each of them mistresses of their own destinies in our Lone Star Legend and austinwoman Talks With… features.

After all, we Austin women are known for both our optimism and audacity. Let’s celebrate the successes we do have and look forward to the future! Enjoy your spring!
