Christine Cox

Christine Cox is originally from Louisiana, the oldest of six kids. Her father was a state senator and her mother, an artist. She grew up in the bayous, skiing and sailing on the lakes and rivers, generally eating a lot of crawfish and gumbo. And she makes a mean gumbo. Cox received her degree in journalism and English from Louisiana State University and has been writing ever since. After living in New Orleans for 20 years, she moved to Austin to be near her brother and sister in 2003 and is grateful for that decision. She has two daughters, Claire and Camille, and works as a freelance writer in almost any capacity. Her motto is “I live to write, and write to live.”

What did you learn while working on your article?
Lorie Marrero was delightful to interview and so well-spoken. She seemed driven and single-minded in her objectives as well, which again, is something we can all learn from – that if we just stay focused on our goals, they’re more likely to be manifested.

Resume highlights
I love to work in my garden when I have free time, or I need to relax and stop worrying about things! If I’m writing, and I’m stuck, I go out and tend to something in the yard, and come back feeling more clearheaded. In the spring, my backyard is covered in wildflowers and huge sunflowers. It gives me great joy and teaches me patience!

What do you think women are able to contribute to entrepreneurship or a business that is different from men?
I feel women make fantastic entrepreneurs, even if it means not functioning within a ‘traditional’ business model. We are problem solvers and out-of-the-box, creative thinkers at heart – two qualities that are a must in a fast-changing business world.

Pam McCown

Pam McCown received her bachelor of science degree in accounting at the University of Colorado, but then immediately fell victim to her artistic passions, starting businesses in craft products and graphic design. McCown brings a unique right/left brain combination of experience in accounting, graphic design and office administration that helps ensure the austinwoman team has the communication and strategic planning necessary to produce a high quality magazine every month. “I see myself as a creative type,” she says, “but one who knows how to count money and remembers to check the clock.” She joined austinwoman in October 2008.

Resumé Highlight

I think that my most impressive job activity has been to help two small infants grow into productive teenagers, with lots of potential still to be shown.

Have you recently experienced growth in your own life?

Yes, I have recently experienced growth – I am wearing a much bigger size of clothes than I used to! I also have recently gone from being a full-time stay-at-home mom to a full-time job at austinwoman.

If you could start your own business, what would it be?

If I did start my own business, it would be something that makes a lot of money with very little energy. I’m pretty sure that I could be fulfilled hanging out by the pool, drinking cocktails.
