Dear austinwoman reader:
On Facebook yet? Or are you LinkedIn? Perhaps MySpace is more you. Whether you are totally connected (or addicted!) to social media or determined to ignore the onslaught of bloggers, blabbers and wall-writers who continually land in your emailbox, it’s next to impossible to ignore the overnight invasion and influence social media is having on both our social and business worlds – even the recent Presidential election. This month, in honor of the 22nd year of the SXSW Music Festival (and the 15th for the Interactive + Film Fests), we feature Austin women who are way-wired and show you how easy it can be to connect and take advantage of these tools. (Or not!) See both our Special Feature Section on Social Media Mavens, as well as a Profile of high tech mom Dorie Pickle and how-to’s from our regular Gadget Girl and Worth columnists – social media mistress CJ Romberger and finance (and tax!) expert S. Kay Bell will fill you in on all the benefits, values and tech tools.
In further tribute to the invasion of diverse artists who shall descend on our fair city this March, we salute legendary blues songstress and Austin icon, Miss Marcia Ball on our cover, who celebrates her 60th birthday this month. This Louisiana-bred balladeer brings her signature blend of blues, rock, country (and party) music to the stage and to our pages, revealing a fascinating path to her own brand of Peace, Love & BBQ. Also, a profile of up-and-coming singer/songwriter Maggie Walters provides some perspective on the whole other side of that musical career learning curve.
Finally, there are a variety of economical escapes from the usual Spring Break fare. Closer to home, a return to historic Galveston Island after Hurricane Ike is our Weekend feature while Explore introduces some of us to Utah during peak spring ski season among its rustic pines and aspens. And while on the subject of needles, we offer acupuncture facelifts for moms in our Spagirl feature and important information about immunizations for your child as the third part of our popular series on Kids’ Health.
Now all that should give you something to blog about. Enjoy!
